Greg Crabtree’s book provides a good framework for evaluating the income statement, especially with respect to salary cap. We did not talk about it in the presentation but this concept must be factored into any performance compensation plan.

The Sin of Wages by William Abernathy provides a more philosophical perspective on compensation and lays a model that marries risk and reward. As covered in the presentation this is not the place to start, but once you have a robust performance comp plan in place it is a logical next step, especially for executives.

Jack Stack’s The Great Game of Business is an open book management classic. While not explicitly about performance comp plans it does a superb job of explaining the trust and transparency that must be present to truly leverage performance compensation into a competitive advantage for your company.
